Hello!

I am a Teaching and Learning Librarian at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where I coordinate information literacy instruction for the university’s first-year composition program and provide instruction, research support, and co-curricular outreach opportunities for K-12, undergraduate, and graduate students. I hold an MSLIS from UIUC and an MA and BS from UNLV. My scholarly interests include how traditionally underserved students engage with academic libraries, the experiences of librarians of color, and professional development led by librarians. I was a 2018 ALA Emerging Leader and 2015-2016 ALA Spectrum Scholar. Before entering academia, I was a high school English teacher for six years and a middle school librarian for one year.

My Work

The vast majority of my work focuses on instruction and outreach in different forms and to all kinds of audiences. Whether I’m working with middle schoolers or tenured faculty, I appreciate the opportunity to teach and learn together. Social justice, equity, inclusion, and diversity are at the core of all my work.

UNLV Instruction & Outreach

I work extensively with the UNLV Composition Program coordinating library instruction for almost 100 English 102 classes each semester. I also teach one-shot library sessions for various First Year Experience classes in Business, Exploring Majors, and Fine Arts. I also co-host two Wikipedia edit-a-thons per year in addition to various co-curricular outreach.

K-12 Instruction & Outreach

I organize and teach during our two outreach events for middle and high school National History Day participants. Night at the Library 1 focuses on research and information gathering while Night at the Library 2 focuses on project creation. I also regularly teach information literacy to high school students conducting research for AP or IB classes.

Professional Development

UNLV University Libraries hosts professional development opportunities for faculty, part-time instructors, and graduate teaching assistants each year. All institutes emphasize backwards design and transparent learning. I play a leading role in our Creative Research Faculty Institute and Teaching Research-Based Writing in the English 102 Curriculum Institute.

Service

I greatly enjoy service and have served on UNLV University Libraries Awards Committee, Equity and Inclusion Committee, and various search committees. At the university level, I served on the UNLV Spanos Award Committee which selects the recipient of UNLV’s highest award for teaching. I am also on the UNLV Faculty Senate General Education Committee. Nationally, I serve on the ACRL Instruction Section’s Discussion Group Steering Committee and will be the vice chair 2020-2021.
